Classification
Cyclic analog of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (Melanotan II, non-selective melanocortin agonist)
Mechanism of action
Lactam-bridged cyclic heptapeptide analog of α-MSH with agonist activity at MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R. MC1R activation in melanocytes raises cAMP and upregulates MITF-driven eumelanin synthesis; central MC3R/MC4R signaling is studied in appetite regulation and erectile physiology.
Investigated research applications
- Melanocortin receptor subtype binding and cAMP accumulation assays
- Melanogenesis, tyrosinase activity and MITF expression models
- UV-photoprotection and pigmentation studies in skin explants
- Central MC4R signaling in feeding-behavior models
Commonly reported assay endpoints
cAMP EC₅₀ per MCR subtypeMelanin contentTyrosinase activityMinimal erythema dose (MED)
